광전효과(光電效果 photoelectric effect): 물질이 빛을 흡수하여 자유전자(전도전자 포함)를 생성하는 현상. 또는 이에 따라 전기전도도가 증가하여 기전력이 나타나는 효과이다. 여기서 생긴 자유전자를 광전자라 한다. 원자 등에서 광전자가 방출되는 광이온화, 고체 표면에서 광전자가 방출되는 외부광전효과, 절연체나 반도체 등의 전도전자 증가에 따라 전기전도도가 증가하는 내부광전효과(광전도), 경계면에 기전력이 나타나는 광기전력효과 등이 있다. 일반적으로 외부광전효과를 말할 때가 많다.
