일식(日蝕 solar eclipse): 달이 태양과 지구 사이에 놓여 지구에서 볼 때 태양의 일부 또는 전부가 가리어지는 현상. 이때는 태양·달·지구가 일직선 상에 놓이기 때문에 태양에 의한 달의 그림자가 지상에 생긴다. 그림자에는 빛이 직접 도달하지 않는 본그림자(本影)와 일부의 빛이 도달하는 반그림자(半影)가 있다〔그림 1〕. 본그림자 내에서는 태양이 전부 달에 가려지는 개기일식(total solar eclipse)이 되고, 반그림자 안에서는 태양의 일부가 달에 가려지는 부분일식(partial solar eclipse)이 된다. 또 태양·달·지구가 일직선으로 늘어서도 달의 겉보기 크기가 태양에 비해 작으면 달이 태양을 전부 가리지 못하기 때문에 달 둘레에 태양 본체(광구, photosphere)가 고리처럼 보이게 되는데, 이 현상을 금환식(annular eclipse)이라 한다.
